To take the guesswork out of gifting this holiday season, we went straight to the source to find out what guys really want to see under the tree. Good Housekeeping surveyed 100 men of varying ages — most between the ages of 35 and 64 — to find out exactly which gifts, services, and experiences they’re adding to their holiday wish list this year.
One thing’s for sure: Classic gifts still hold up. Eighty-two percent of the men we surveyed would rather unwrap a practical gift than something sentimental. Keeping that in mind, 65% also aren’t a fan of personalized or monogrammed gifts (even though mom or grandma would certainly say otherwise).
And while some gift-givers prefer to think outside of the box, it’s clear that some of the clichés surrounding men’s gifts (think: golf, grilling, and booze) exist for a reason. When asked to rank which gift they’d most like to receive on Christmas, a majority said they’d prefer a bottle of their favorite booze, closely followed by wireless headphones, grillware or cookware, and a quality pair of gloves. Even though wireless headphones and fitness trackers have been on the market for a while, men still want ’em — more than half of the men surveyed ranked them as the top two tech gifts they’d like to unwrap this year.
Subscription boxes, which are more appropriate than ever due to limited travel and possible shipping delays, are well-loved among the men we surveyed. It may come as a surprise, but they would rather receive clothing subscriptions than food options (but booze-related boxes are a close second). But if you really want to wow them, the men we surveyed were all about experiential gifts, whether it’s in person or online. In light of current events, it’s best to keep things virtual this year, but luckily there are tons of online classes and events available right now.
